Altinkum is a small, lively and friendly resort.  You will get to know the local people very quickly because they will enjoy talking with you and offering you a cup of Turkish or Apple Tea known as Çay.  It does not matter if this is your first or last trip, you will find yourself coming back to Altinkum year after year to visit your new friends.

Altinkum means “Golden Sands” and with its beaches which gently shelve into the inviting turquoise blue Aegean sea you will soon see how the resort gained its name.  Set on a sandy bay, Altinkum is a purpose built resort with a relaxed and informal atmosphere.  This is a place for people who love the beach; there are no fewer than four within easy reach.

The Main Beach in front of the resort is a long wide stretch of golden sand, where you can bask in the sun or relax and catch the rays in a pedalo or try out a range of water sports.   Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent and once settled there will be no need to move until sunset. There are boat trips available where you can enjoy your lunch and afternoon tea in one of the many secluded coves of the Bodrum peninsula and try your hand at snorkeling.

Why not try hopping on the bus (Dolmus) they come along every 5 minutes and cost around £0.50. Hop on where you want, stop where you want.

A mile away, beyond the harbor, the Third Beach offers a quieter environment and its waters are clear and sparkling. Set in a nice little cove you can relax or stop at one of the friendly restaurants and have a nice bite to eat.  The local drink is Raki and is a favorite among the Turkish people.

When you finally tear yourself away from the sea, Altinkum’s shops offer an interesting range of value for money goods and souvenirs.  Well worth looking out for are Leather Handbags and Jackets, Designer Clothes, Turkish Carpets, Onyx Vases and Ornaments etc.,  Gold and Silver jewellery is a must, there are many unusual designs and all at affordable prices.

The weekly market in Yenihisar known as the Pazar, sells everything from spices and clothes to even cookers and gives you the opportunity to haggle and have some fun.  There is a wide range of home produced fruits and vegetables. Fresh eggs, local cheeses and home baked village bread are also readily available.

Nearby, about a 20 minute drive away is the quiet and picturesque village of Akbuk. Set in a backdrop of Olive and Pine tree covered mountainside, this sleepy little fishing village offers you good food with a choice of many restaurants offering traditional Turkish cuisine, fresh fish to good old English grub. Nice beaches and crystal clear waters create the perfect atmosphere to relax in.  Every week there is a local market where you can buy traditional Turkish goods and delicacies.

Most shops are happy to take foreign currency but please be advised that Scottish notes and those issued by Northern Ireland Banks are not accepted. There are local markets and hyper-markets where you will find they accept most major credit cards.

There is a new Aqua Park that opened in 2005 just outside Didim, this is a great affordable day out for all the family no matter whether you are young or old. You can chill out on a sun bed for the day or spend the day swimming and trying out all the different water slides.

Didim is shaped as a peninsula surrounding Mugla on the East Coast with a huge inlet of Akbuk Town, the Aegean Sea on the West and East Coast, Lake Bafa and the Menderes River  on the Northern coast.  123 km to the city centre of Aydin, 53 km to the town of Söke, and 100 km to Bodrum spread to 300 km2 of area.

You cannot come to Altinkum without visiting some of the nearby ancient sites.  Only 4 km away is the Temple of Apollo at Didyma.  Three columns still stand to their full height measuring 19.70 meters and 2.40 meters in width.  A mass of marble stumps gives an idea of the colossal size of the original structure.

Other sites worth visiting include the classical  Greek City of Prienne and the ancient port of Miletus, now landlocked by the silting up of the River Maeander, Ephesus, Pamukkale and Dalyan to name but a few. After a hard day of sunbathing or sightseeing why not de-stress yourself with a relaxing massage at one of the many local Turkish Baths they have in Turkey – one not to be missed.

Bodrum-Milas International Airport is approximately a one hour drive away from Altinkum.

Izmir International Airport is approximately a two hour drive away from Altinkum.
